Hi,
my name is Jeff Fair, and welcome to Alexander Publishing's newest
Original Patch Fake Book Volume. We've called this volume Record Date
because virtually all the sounds here have been used on records or
jingles. So you'll probably recognize a number of them.
For best results, I suggest that you set the Mod Wheel and Foot Control at 99. Turn the Pitch and Amp OFF, and turn the EG BIAS on.
01. Jeff's Piano 2E: this sound was used on "September Rain", from George Howard's Love Will Follow album. It's a Yamaha CP70-style piano sound for underlying pads.
02. Left Hand Piano 2: I used this on the upcoming Hearts and Minds debut album. This is the left hand/bottom end of a grand piano.
03. Jeff's Piano 9+: This sound has a rich chorus effect built into the program. It's a great compositional sound for ballads.
04. Acoutine 4: this contains acoustic piano qualities with the sound of a metal tine being struck. If you have two DX7's try layering this sound with Electric Piano4.
05. E. Piano 4: this sound has been used on almost every record and commercial I've worked on. Raising the output level of Operator 2 increases the bite, while adjusting the level of Operator 4 wil emphasize the midrange.
06. Fair Piano 1: you'll be surprised at how nice this sound suts through.
07. Genesis: a Genesis-style piano pad. You hear it frequently on Phil Collin's albums.
08. Clavless: this sound simulates the sound of a Hammond B-3 organ with Leslie with a clavinet attack. Try changing EG Rate 2, the coarse frequency and output level of Operator 3 to change the clavinet attack. Set after touch level to 99, EG Bias ON, Pitch OFF and Amp OFF. Pressing harder will increase the rotating speakers speed.
09. R. Synbass #6: this Roland synth bass sound is used on George Howard's Dancing in the Sun and Love Will Follow albums. Both albums went to #1 Bilboard's jazz charts.
10. R. Synbass #9: this sound was used as the synth bass on the Winan's anti-apartheid song, "Let My People Go", on Quincy Jones Qwest record label.
11. R. Synbass #10: this synth bass sound has great depth and works not only by itself, but also in combination with slap bass style sounds. Used on a number of albums including Love Will Follow and World Sitizen's Give and Take on Capitol Records.
12. Mdona Bass: for those of us who don't own Mini-Moogs. This sound is the DX7 clone of Madonna "Like a Virgin", bass sound.
13. Woody 2: this synth bass sound is tight and percussive with a short filter envelope on its attack.
14. Nessy*Pluk: from George Howard's Love Will Follow album. Nessy Pluk is an underwater harp, percussive synth sound. Set Mod Wheel to 99, Pitch OFF, Amp OFF and EG Bias ON.
15. Jermaine 1: developed for Jermaine Jackson's Five Star tour.
16. Brassy 2: good brass sound!
17. New-Brass 1: tight punchy synth brass. Created for Jermaine Jackson's tour and Union Bank's indutrial film.
18. T.Bone 10*: still the best trombone brass sound I've heard on the DX7. Use the mod wheel to add bell distortion when this sound is played at high velocity. Set Mod Wheel to 99, Pitch OFF, Amp OFF and EG Bias ON. Used on Jermain's Precious Moments Tour.
19. & Toto Too: similar to that famous pad sound on Toto's "Africa".
20. J. Cellos: good cello sound.
21. FdbkSwell 2: slow swelling synth digital string pad. Used on Five Stars upcoming album.
22. JersDrm 2*: Jermaine's Dream. Surrealistic crystal glasses. Mod wheel brings in shimmering bells. This sound is very popular in film and soundtrack use. Used on Jermaine's tour and the upcoming Five Stars album.
23. BambooSng*: used on national TRW ad campaign award winning computer animation commercial. Adding mod wheel adds "chiff" to sound's attack.
24. Drm Unit 6*: surrealistic synth bell sound used on Five Stars upcoming album. Using the mod wheel adds reverb (sonar effect). Set Mod wheel to 99, Pitch OFF, Amp OFF and EG Bias ON.
25. DrmTrmpt 1: this sound is a study in high surrealistic trumpets. This sound seems to have its own digital reverb built into the program. Programmed for use on Jermaine Jackson's Precious Moments tour.
26. DremEcho 1: first play 16 notes, then when arpeggios are played while the sustain pedal is held, the arpeggios will repeat themselves.
27. Pure 6: this is a hollow synth pad. It was used on both the Winan's and Five Stars albums.
28. Edge 14: a fun percussive synth sound. Used on Jermaine Jackson's Precious Moments Tour.
29. Springsss: as soon as you hear this sound you'll know how many thousands of times you've heard it before.
30. PotsnPans 7: aluminum pots and pans being struck with a wooden spoon.
31. SimTom 10: deep hollow synth tom sound used on the intro of the Winan's "Let My People Go", cut.
32. SynSnr 1: this sound has the texture of a thin bent cymbal when multiple keys are struck simultaneouslyin the fourth octave of the keyboard. Try using notes that are grouped tightly together in pitch (possibly 1/2 steps apart).
