Comments (as published by SSU on the Greytsounds website):
This voice and multi collection has been designed with the "home demo"
musician in mind. Whatever your personal approach to assembling your demos may
be, this disk can work for you. There are kicks, snares, and toms as single
voices, using both elements of AWM, and RCM combinations of AFM and AWM
elements. There are also four element voices which have kicks and snares set up
in a split configuration on the keyboard. A bank of percussive voices is also
included. All of these voices take advantage of the layering capabilities of the
SY77. By themselves, the actual drum samples often lack the punch that
contemporary musicians are looking for. Other times, the drum samples are too
one-dimensional, lacking depth of expression. Both of these problems can be
solved by treating the drums as an actual voice, and then layering additional
elements to support the basic drum sample.
Snare drums get more "crack"
and a vastly wider range of realistic, useable dynamics and timbre; kick drums
get more fundamental, a truly solid bottom that can be felt; toms get more depth
and range of timbre and sustain. Of course, when we treat a drum sound as a
voice, the full power of the SY77's extensive effects section can be applied to
create very contemporary and complete drum sounds. For demonstration purposes,
we have provided twelve Multis and twelve Sequences that should illustrate how
the drums work together in a Multi arrangement. The sequences were all played
into the SY77 by a live drummer with pads, and cover rock, fusion, funk and
Tekno styles.
If you feel so inclined, feel free to use any or all of this
sequence material in your own songs! The best way to hear the power of these new
drum voices is to listen to the SY77 through a wide range, high power stereo
system with lots of amplifier headroom. These voices are very dynamic! Play them
beginning with a very light and gentle touch, and then work up to full velocity.
Carefully listen for the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle!) changes in timbre
and volume. Great care has been taken so that the acoustic-type snares, for
example, accurately follow the true change in dynamics and timbre.
Comments (as published by SSU in their 1992-93 catalogue):
Are
you frustrated with the drum voices available to you in the SY77? Do
your demos lack the percussive punch and crack that characterize
contemporary recordings? Then this collection is for you! These voices
can be used by the musician who is creating demos in his or her home
studio, wheter it be on a multi-track tape machine or completely on the
SY77.
